“The SEND system is complicated. We know how to navigate it — so you don’t have to do it alone.”

Making the system work

Your child deserves more than a diagnosis

A diagnosis or assessment finding is just the beginning. The next challenge is making the education system respond. Schools are stretched. Local authorities are under pressure. Waiting lists are long. EWL knows how to cut through the delay and get your child the formal, documented support they’re entitled to.

Understanding the system

How the EHCP process works

The EHCP process can feel impossibly complicated. Here’s a plain-English overview of what it involves and where EWL can help.

What is an EHCP?

An Education, Health and Care Plan is a legally binding document that specifies the educational provision a child with significant SEND needs is entitled to receive. It is produced by the Local Authority following a Needs Assessment. Once in place, the school must deliver what the plan specifies — it is not optional.

1

Needs Assessment Request

You or the school requests an EHCP Needs Assessment. The Local Authority has 6 weeks to decide whether to proceed.

2

Evidence Gathering

The LA collects reports from education, health and social care. A private EWL report strengthens your case significantly here.

3

Draft EHCP

If approved, a draft plan is issued. You have the right to comment, amend, and challenge provisions that are too vague or inadequate.

4

Final Plan & Review

The final EHCP is issued. Annual reviews must take place. EWL supports you at every review to ensure the plan stays current and effective.

Questions

Frequently asked

Yes. Any parent or carer can request an EHCP Needs Assessment directly from their Local Authority. You do not need the school’s permission or agreement. EWL can support you in making this request and providing the evidence needed.

Schools can discourage EHCP applications for various reasons, including resource concerns. Your child’s right to an assessment is independent of the school’s view. A private EWL report provides the independent professional evidence to support your application regardless of the school’s position.

Ideally in Year 5 or early Year 6. Many families wait until Year 6 which leaves very little time. The earlier the planning starts, the smoother the transition. Contact Lauren in Year 5 for initial guidance — even if you’re not ready to formally engage yet.

Yes. EWL delivers EOTAS (Education Otherwise Than At School) provision, tailored to each child, for children whose needs cannot currently be met in a school setting, as a Kent County Council-approved education supplier. Packages are built around the individual child, mapped to the EHCP, and include regular written progress reporting for parents and the local authority. Pricing depends on the budget allocated to each child.

A refusal can be appealed to the SEND Tribunal (SENDIST). EWL supports families through the appeals process as part of our EHCP service — helping you build the strongest possible case. Most appeals that reach a tribunal decision are decided in the family’s favour — here’s what the figures show.

If a school is not delivering the provision specified in an EHCP, this is a legal breach. EWL can support you in formally raising this with the school and Local Authority, and in escalating where necessary.

Yes. EWL reports are written to support EHCP applications and can be used as evidence to support an EHCP application. They carry the professional weight of a specialist SEND practitioner’s assessment.
